I go through phases. Sometimes I’d rather spend time reading a book, or gardening, or quilting, than puttering with my camera. That’s not often, but still. And, sometimes, I have a love of black & white photographs that borders on obsession. Especially when photographing my own kids.
I know that dark and moody black & white images aren’t necessarily the first thing we think of, when we think of childhood portraits. But, I love them. I love the fact that a good, moody black & white helps to emphasize the other side of childhood 😉 Don’t get me wrong, fun & joyful energy still makes me smile the biggest. But, there’s just something about a temper tantrum that excites my perverse side.
I am not above shoving my camera in the direction of my kids, if one of them is mid-meltdown. Maybe not the finest parenting moment. But, you know what? It’s honest. Life isn’t always buttercups and roses. And, kids certainly aren’t always happy and joyful. Just like adults aren’t.
There is a beauty to be found in those angry or sad or quiet moments that often goes overlooked. So, my message (even with clients)? Embrace the chaos! Embrace the emotion and the moment. They go by so quickly.
Long live black & white!
