Listen, it’s easy to focus on the moms. We’re at the forefront of our children’s lives from before they even enter this world. And, well, our society just tends to make a bigger deal out of us. But, where would we be without the dads?
Those men who work tirelessly to support their families. Who get up at 2:00 in the morning to soothe a crying baby. Who are pooped on mid-diaper change and aren’t phased in the slightest. Who kiss boo-boos. And, say “I love you” every day.
The men who can make their children and their partners feel loved and cared for and safe. These are the guys we need to celebrate. Not just on Father’s Day, but every day.
You already know how I feel about special days to honor the moms…my feelings about dads are no different. But, because our culture has a habit of highlighting the strength/courage/dedication of motherhood more frequently than fatherhood (sorry, Hallmark)…I think we all just need to be more aware of appreciating those men who come into our lives and fill such a huge space for us. Whether they happen to be our own fathers, or the man who stepped up to be a dad when yours couldn’t…or the man who is dad to your own children.
There is a quiet, and humbling, strength in the dedication that it takes to be a dad…a good dad…every day, even in the face of all the crap life throws at us.
So, thank you. For what you do, every day.
