So, here’s the thing….when your little girl asks (and asks, and asks) to try on your wedding dress, eventually you have to let her. Mine was never cleaned; it still sports the dust and stains of that day, which are really solid memories for me…but, yesterday? I was pushed into the future of what it will be like one day…saying goodbye to her as a permanent, present, daily fixture in our lives. And, this too, is a good solid memory that I will keep with me.
As a New York family photographer, I’m fortunate in that I have the wherewithal, gear, and space available to me to capture some unique family moments. Don’t get me wrong, my favorites are still those off-the-cuff images that just speak to our daily lives. But, this? This required something a little bit more.
She had been hounding me, for almost a year, to play dress-up in my wedding dress. I wasn’t worried about her ruining it (let’s be real – there are red wine stains on it from when one of my aunts sloshed me in the middle of the Macarena, and the bustle is torn from when our minister stepped on the train during the Conga Line)…so, no. I wasn’t at all worried about her ruining the dress. I was just being lazy. But, it was the 1st of February. Superbowl Sunday. Day for men. So why not take a few minutes for just us girls?
Her joy at dressing up like Mommy. The laughter and fun we shared. These are the reasons I am a photographer. Because I don’t want to forget. And, I want to have those memories to look back on, to laugh over…Because, one day, she won’t be a permanent fixture in my every single day. She’ll have her own family. And, I’ll have those memories.
There’s who we are as individuals. Who we are as women. Who we are as sisters, mothers, friends. I am her mother. And, she makes me so very proud.
