The Beautiful Mess That Is Motherhood

Motherhood is often portrayed in the extremes: idyllic sweetness or chaos. But, as with anything else in life, the truth more often lies somewhere in the middle. Never was this made so evident as it has been with the pandemic of the last two years. I initially expected the pandemic to curtail client sessions, but I could not have been more wrong. If anything, I have seen more families rejecting the noise of the outside world and focusing on their relationships with each other. It was a beautiful light during what was otherwise a dark time.

Crystalized among those moments is the persistent endurance, patience, and dedication that the mothers I’m privileged to photograph have for their children. No, we usually aren’t all camera-ready, but that’s not really the point. The point is that your children simply would not be a part of this world without you. So, while many moms want the photographs to “just focus on the kids,” your kids need to see you too.

If the pandemic taught me anything, it’s that we need to value ourselves as much as we value the people we love. We need to let them really see us as much as we attend to them. So, the important thing about photos of mothers and children is not whether your hair looks great or if your kids behave like perfect angels. The important thing is that you are present with them, that know you were there too. Mothers Day isn’t just one day a year, as any of us who’ve been at this gig for a while know. The real celebration of mothers happens in the snot-filled tissues, the sleepless nights, the temper tantrums, the last-minute Halloween costumes, the first crayon scribbles, the school talent shows, the baseball games in the rain, the bedtime stories.

Moms, your kids love you every day in little ways. And, more often than not, it’s those little things that matter the most.
