Any boy moms out there? I’m raising my hand right along with you.
Raising boys in today’s world is an interesting balancing act. We must teach them resolve and determination and conviction, while also shining a bright light on kindness and compassion and gentleness. None of these traits is more important than the other. However, they are all equally necessary to raising resilient and humble and understanding and inquisitive characters.
When Katie called me to schedule a session, she and her little men had recently gone through some major changes to their family. So, I wasn’t sure what to expect of our time together. Transitions are tough, in and of themselves. But, when you’re transitioning with elementary-aged and tween boys in tow, cue the hurdles. Katie, however, was the picture of grit and softness that all kids need, especially those who’s worlds have shifted a bit.
As a family photographer in Westchester NY, I’m continually amazed by the power of mothers, and single moms in particular. There is that negotiation between firm and soft that can be difficult during even the best of times. To see someone so deftly wield her motherhood to maintain the quirky and silly and inquisitive and thoughtful personalities of her boys was awesome.
Katie’s boys are definitely their own people. Teddy is thoughtful and introspective and, perhaps, a little shy about his own passions and interests. That uncertainty seems to be the hallmark of the early tween years for so many.
Bobby offers up silliness on a platter. As much as his brother might be cautious of new people, Bobby is outgoing and demonstrative in his zest for fun. The physicality of his energy shines through.
I suppose the lesson here is to embrace the individuality of boyhood. To support the curiosity right along side the sensitivity. To allow for their independence and individualism to rise. I think our world will be better place with more Teddy’s and Bobby’s…and Katie’s in it.
