Home Base – Rockland County Photographer

So, this fall…just a few short months ago, I nervously made the decision to move studio spaces.

I’ve been happily ensconced in the Garner Arts Center for the past several years. It is a beautiful, and incredibly historic, old arts & industrial complex in northern Rockland County, NY. But, for a while, I had known that I needed a change. I needed something that felt light and peaceful. More nature, less industrial. That’s when I found Bell-Ans.

Another complex steeped in a rich history extending back to the late 1800s, I couldn’t be happier!

More centrally located for clients…a wall of big, beautiful windows…an expanse of green lawn and trees…heck, there’s even a small farm!

I big puffy heart love it. And, while I still haven’t figured out how/where to hang my tree swing, I do love my chalkboard wall. Chalkboard drawing is good for the soul, especially when little kids are imagining it! Jumping off furniture doesn’t hurt either 😉

A Little More Happy – Rockland County Family Photographer

I fell off the wagon again. Seriously fell off. I mean how long has it been since my last blog post??? Halloween. Ugh. Epic fail.

Well, I can’t think of a better way to get back on the horse (or wagon, or whatever) than by sharing one of my favorite family sessions ever.

January sometimes tends to be a slower month for photographers, as most families are coming down off the high (and, um, expense) of the winter holidays. But, I’m fortunate to have clients who embrace the off-season and the beauty that winter brings. Seriously, an in-home session where we get to play in the snow too?!?! Yes, please!

Sherri called me at the end of December to schedule an in-home session for she and her husband, their two little nuggets, and their great big doggy. Yes, please! I’ve heard some people bemoan photographing the toddler set because, well, they don’t listen. But, for me, that’s what makes it fun…because they are the activity directors instead of me. It’s such a fun and infectious energy. And, with pets involved???? Golden.

There is nothing better than capturing authentic family moments. Things don’t have to be so orchestrated. Honestly, really seriously honestly, life’s most beautiful moments happen in the in-between…in-between scheduled activities or important events. It’s those in-between moments that make my heart happiest.

The Haunted Mansion – Rockland County Photographer

Okay, so it wasn’t exactly a haunted mansion, but I did take some of my favorite young photographers to an abandoned asylum about a year ago. It was spooky and creepy and FABULOUS! And, totally perfect for Halloween. (This is where I’m duty-bound to advise you to speak to the proper authorities and get the proper permits before adventuring).

I’m one of those embarrassing people at movies who jumps and startles super easily. Yep, I’ve left nail marks in my husband’s arm before (poor guy). Scaredy cat. That’s me. So, this was a huge departure from my normal day to day.

I drew the line at finding the morgue though. That’s just too much. They’re way more brave than me. But, we made a morning of it. Exploring a long forgotten, but beautiful, old place. New York is rife with old and abandoned buildings. Sadly, many of them ultimately meet their ends with a bulldozer. But, I suppose that’s what time and absence do to our history…

So, in honor of the spookiest day of the year…I give you the spookiest place I’ve certainly ever been to. Enjoy the day. I hope it’s positively terrifying!

Daddy’s Girl – Westchester NY Photographer

Okay, I normally find myself gravitating towards the toddler/preschool age group. It’s such a period of change in childhood…so many firsts, so much personality, testing the waters of independence.

But this little lady had me from the time she crawled into my studio. She is, in a word, smoochy.

What I love most about families just starting out with the first child is the absolute sense of wonder and connectedness that follows them around. I mean, even big strong dads like Greg are wrapped tightly around those tiny little fingers.

And, then there’s mom…just absorbing how her tiny human and her spouse have quietly taken up all those tiny spaces in her heart. It really is awesome.

New moms and dads make me just a little nostalgic. And, are a really great reminder of why I do what I do. Finding the fun and happiness of families is what it’s all about!

Man’s Best Friend – Nyack Family Photographer

While I’ve been, admittedly, remiss in keeping up with the blog in the past six months, I’m honestly trying to get back on the bandwagon. And, if you’ve followed my studio Facebook or Instagram pages, you’re well aware of my family’s love affair with our dogs.

We lost our old guy Maxx last winter and it was our kids’ first experience losing someone/something that mattered so greatly to them. My daughter still says “goodnight” to Maxx’s star every night.

Steve and the kids and I all wondered how our tiny pup, Ruby, would fare once her buddy had gone. And, it was iffy. She’s sensitive (like many little dogs are).

So, while we weren’t planning on getting another dog any time soon, all the sudden there was a Rufus.

Rufus is a HUGE (literally & figuratively) ball of energy. Almost 90lbs of energy to be exact. Did I mention he LOVES the water? Anytime there’s a hose or sprinkler involved, he’s your guy!

So, what’s my point in sharing all this? If you have pets that are a part of your family, I encourage you to make them a part of your family session. Yeah, it might be a little more busy, but I can 100% guarantee that those moments of your children and their furry or feathery or scaly buddies will be something on which you’ll all look back and smile. Honestly, some of my favorite images of my kids involve our dogs…there is laughter and tears…all the real stuff that makes life an adventure.

So, bring your pets…or let them hang out while we’re shooting in your home. But, let them be with you. You’ll always be thankful that you did.
